TOMMY CRAWFORD is an actor, theater artist, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and lyricist based in Wilder, VT. As an actor, recent roles include Peel in The Minutes (Shaker Bridge), Paul McCartney in Only Yesterday (59e59, Northern Stage, NY Times Critics Pick); Feste, Original Music in Twelfth Night (Two River); Maks in Ironbound (Shaker Bridge); Carl Perkins in MDQ (Weston); Alan in 1 Man, 2 Guvnors (Florida Studio); Percy in SeaWife (White Heron, Naked Angels, Drama Desk Nomination, Outstanding Music, with The Lobbyists). As a composer and lyricist, Tommy is interested in experimental musicals that push the boundaries of form and blend band performance and theatrical storytelling. His music weaves together many strands of americana — folk, blues, bluegrass, country, rock n roll — with his skillful singing and fingerpicking, distinctive lyricism, and unique perspective. His songs go for the head and the heart, inquiring into our relationship with nature, interrogating the self, excavating personal relationships, and sometimes reading like short works of poetry and philosophy wrapped in the guise of a folk pop song. A dad, he also writes songs about diapers. His latest project is The Vermont Farm Project, a Northern Stage commission based on over two years of interviews with New England farmers that investigates what it means to farm this land, today. Original musicals and plays with music include Miss Mitchell (EST/Sloan Commission), Cry Eden (Access Theater), From Cold Lake (PIT), Nia (UNC/Chapel Hill). Tommy has composed music for Heisenberg, Victorian Ladies Detective Collective, Antigone, Cymbeline, The Tempest, and others. Founding member of folk band and theater ensemble The Lobbyists. Proud member artist of EST since 2016. Tommy lives in Vermont with his wife, director Sarah Elizabeth Wansley, and their daughter Athena.
