John Giampietro is a stage director and teaching artist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His theater and opera productions have been seen at The Juilliard School, Ensemble Studio Theater, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Yale School of Music, Curtis Institute of Music, The Flea Theater, Vermont Shakespeare Festival, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, among others.
John is a faculty member of the Ellen and James S. Marcus Vocal Institute at The Juilliard School. He teaches Acting for the Singer and helped develop their 4-year undergraduate acting curriculum. At Juilliard, John also coaches singers and directs opera at all degree levels. Notable productions at Juilliard include Il Turco in Italia (“a triumph of comedic ingenuity”- New York Times), Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (“a particularly deft touch”- Opera News), and The Turn of the Screw, among others.
John is the Co-Director of the opera program at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. He teaches acting for the singer and has directed Les Contes d’Hoffmann, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and a film version of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo.
John is also the principal stage director and acting instructor of the Chautauqua Opera Conservatory at The Chautauqua Institution in New York. He has directed over twenty opera productions for the program.
John’s writing includes new English dialogue versions of Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, Mozart’s The Impresario and Die Zauberflöte. His play, Strength of God and other grotesques was produced by Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia.
John studied acting and directing at Hofstra University in New York. His acting credits include Hamlet in Hamlet, Romeo in Romeo & Juliet for the National Shakespeare Company, Odysseus in Hekabe with Gloria Foster, and The Devils at New York Theater Workshop, among others.
